SAN ANTONIO — Railroad Commissioner David Porter warned members of his brand-new Eagle Ford Task Force on Wednesday that they're taking on a tough job.
"This will be somewhat time-consuming," Porter said. "It'll probably be a little bit difficult and unpleasant at times."
But it will be good for the state of Texas, said Porter, who launched the task force and appointed its members. The group met for the first time in San Antonio.
Drilling in the Eagle Ford shale "is a huge economic boom, particularly for South Texas," Porter said. "That story needs to get out there."
At the same time, it's important to develop the shale responsibly, said Porter, who wants to avoid the problems that led to a backlash against drilling in the Barnett Shale of North Texas. The Railroad Commission regulates drilling companies.
In North Texas, "We weren't out front talking to community groups," he said. "There was a perception out there that the (Railroad) Commission wasn't doing much of anything, and the oil companies were doing anything they wanted. That wasn't reality, but it was the perception."
